Teledyne-Commodore Ready for Tests of Chemical Weapons Destruction Technology

Teledyne-Commodore LLC has shipped all of the major components for two of its Solvated Electron Technology (SETä) processing units to two Utah locations in preparation for demonstrations of its technology for the destruction of chemical weapons.

The components include the SET systems, the accompanying ammonia fluid-jet cutting systems, and the oxidation and dunnage systems. The units were shipped to the Tooele Army Depot in Tooele, and to the Dugway Proving Ground. Beginning June 26 and continuing through Sept. 26, Teledyne-Commodore will demonstrate the ability of the SET system to destroy deadly chemical warfare agents and neutralize explosives and propellants associated with these weapons.

The tests are being conducted for the U.S. Army's Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment (ACWA) program under a $7.9 million contract awarded in February.

"The on-schedule shipment of this equipment represents a significant milestone for our company," said William C. Burns, president of Teledyne-Commodore. "While preparing the equipment for shipping, we also incorporated several process improvements that we developed during our successful tests of this technology at Redstone Arsenal (Ala.) in 1998."

The SET system is based on a reducing solution of sodium and anhydrous ammonia, and will be able to destroy mustard agent and the nerve agents sarin and VX. All process residues will be safe for disposal in regulated landfills by a proprietary Teledyne-Commodore oxidation process. These tests will be conducted at the Chemical Agent and Munitions Decontamination System (CAMDS) near Tooele.

Teledyne-Commodore will use the Ammonia Fluid-Jet system to demonstrate the safe removal of explosives and propellants from the rockets that deliver the chemical weapons. Following the removal operation, the SET system will be used to neutralize the energetics in the weapons. Again, all residues will be rendered safe for disposal in regulated landfills. These tests will be conducted at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah.
